Still a Bit Out of Order

There's been a little progress in getting back to normal. On Friday TypePad suffered a DDoS (Direct Denial of Service) attack, striking at them just as they had planned to move everything over to a new data centre.

It's caused chaos. I am still not able to put photos into posts, and many photos already published, even long ago, cannot be seen. Until a few minutes ago I was not able to see comments at all, so if you made a comment before then I'm afraid it's gone for good; please try again.

Mike Johnston at The Online Photographer is another TypePad blogger who has been put through the mill this weekend. As he is in the USA, I was at my keyboard this morning while he was still (I presume) in bed; I just emailed him to say comments seems to be working again.

Have patience folks; It'll all get sorted out eventually.

Man, Out of Sight

Folks

I'm unable to upload photos at the moment; I think it's due to Typepad (the providers of the blogging platform the Wanderer uses) moving to a new server; there are always a few problems with a big move or change like this.

I've got a post all ready to go, but it'll make little sense unless you can see the photos too. I'll tell you the post title, though; it's The Wonky Church.

Roger the Wanderer.

Technical Difficulties

Technical difficulties? the North Bucks Wanderer has certainly been having some. A new computer back up plan revealed problems which took all week to sort out. Meanwhile I wasn't able to upload photos I'd taken just for the second post about General Harold Blount of Woughton on the Green; A Naval Man in Buckinghamshire.

My apologies. The computer, whose brain was getting very full, is now much happier.

Out of Order

Folks

After being overwhelmed with non blogging stuff then being horribly ill (not the Covid) for a fortnight I haven't posted for over three weeks. I even missed St George's day! I'm feeling rather better now and I hope to be back next week; see you soon.

Where’s Yer (Laundry) Bin?

Yes, where have I been?

For those who have been here in the last couple of weeks expecting to see new posts, um, well, there haven’t been any. My apologies! I’ve been doing some industrial electrical work, a skill from my time in the years BB; Before Blogging.

I haven’t been doing that all the time in the last fortnight, because I can’t. An injury from 15 years ago means that working in awkward spaces is very difficult and tiring, and it takes me a long time to recover. It was a whole week this time before I stopped limping.

But now I’m back on the case. The electrical work was at the Washetaria launderette in Stony Stratford, where three of the small 35 year old washing machines are to be taken out, making room for two brand new large machines.

It was great to do this sort of work again, but there’s not much room behind the machines and it’s half full of water pipes and power leads to the machines; the very definition of an awkward space.

Social Distancing Project 958 pm, 1st July 2020

I’ve been maintaining the washers and dryers at the Washetaria in Church Street for quite a while now, and during the lockdown I would come out to the shop after it had shut in the evening, so I could work undisturbed.

The photo was taken on the 1st of July last year. It seems to have been taken during opening hours because it was still light at eight, but today (on the last day of January) sunset was before five. It’s a shot from my photo project on the lockdown, The Distance Project.

Hot Stuff

Drain Pig title pageThis illustration featured in a post on my now mothballed blog Roger the Reader. Critical Mess was a 1983 cartoon book, written and illustrated by Dan Pearce.

A completely new heating system at the historic* headquarters of the North Bucks Wanderer means it will be reliably cozy this winter.

But emptying my vast attic and extensive cellars to give the plumbers access, along with keeping out of their way as they installed radiators and ran pipework, took half a week of my time.

So I haven't had time to create a post for this Thursday. Sorry about that, but things will be back to normal next week, just in time for me to take a couple of weeks off for Christmas and New Year! Oh well...

Meanwhile, is there anything you'd like me to take a look at, in North Bucks?

*A fine example of early 60s council house vernacular...

For all you keen explorers of North Bucks, nothing is more off putting than cold feet on a day out. So seeing as it's coming up to Christmas, what you need is... socks!

I make a small percentage from sales through Amazon links, no matter what you buy while you visit their site from here. This helps me but costs you nothing, so if you make a purchase via the NBW, thank you.
