Tuesday at the Races
If there are lots of children with frying pans, it just has to be Olney pancake race day; Shrove Tuesday. This year it was on the 1st of March.
So what we have here are young boys and girls taking part in an event that dates back to 1445; this is a live tradition.
I’ve posted all about the pancake race and how it began before, so I’m not going to repeat myself. But you can read all about it; see why it’s pancakes and how Shrove Tuesday is a moveable feast linked to Easter, at the link above.
The children’s races are run well before the main event, so if you are reading this in about a year’s time, you need to get to the Market Place by 10 am. They all have a great time except for the one or two it all gets too much for, and it’s very entertaining.
I wonder how many of the Olney women in the main race (at five to twelve) also ran as girls. I also wonder how their performance back then compares with their placings now!
I make a small percentage from sales through Amazon links, no matter what you buy while you visit their site from here. This helps me but costs you nothing, so if you make a purchase via the NBW, thank you.
