The Barrel Bikers, a local motorcycle club, usually have a Christmas party every year. It’s always held after Christmas, on a Saturday near the beginning of February. This doesn’t stop them giving out raffle prizes wrapped in Christmas paper!
It’s pot luck if you have a winning ticket, because you can’t usually tell what you’ve chosen. I think some of the raffle prizes are unwanted Xmas presents, which adds to the risk; “Will I get something I want?” But it’s all taken in good heart. Sooner or later during the evening everyone gets approached by raffle ticket sellers; there’s no escape!
The party used to be just before Christmas, but it couldn’t be held then for some reason, so got put back to the new year. It’s been their Late Christmas Party ever since, and has been held annually for years. Of course there wasn’t one this year, so I thought I’d show you these photos from over a decade ago.
The date moves around a bit; the party in these photos was on the 4th of February 2012, but in 2009 it was on the same day as my 50th birthday, in mid January. I had a good night.
Each party follows the same format. There’s a rock band and rock disco, and a bar. People turn up, pay a reasonable amount (£5 last time) for a ticket, and they’re in. There’s usually a food wagon out the back somewhere. It’s a simple formula, but it works very well.
In normal times The Barrel Bikers hold quite a few events over the year. They are based in Newport Pagnell, at the Workmen’s Social Club in Silver Street. I expect I’ll be visiting them again when I can.
